Project Description
Penelope’s Journeys” is a documentary theatre play inspired by a fictional scenario: “What if Homer’s Odyssey had been written by a woman?”
The play brings to the stage women who have shared their lives with seafarers, flanked by a “chorus” of professional female actors. Three heroines of different generations and backgrounds occupy a hitherto uninhabited territory – a symbol of male dominance: the port. Instead of a theatre stage, a stone warehouse in the port of Piraeus proved to be the ideal venue for the performance.
From there, the three women embark on a journey that resembles neither the fictional adventures of the male traveler nor the melancholy routine of the faithful and devoted waiting partner.
These women become exponents of a different, courageous narrative that has remained silent. They negotiate loyalty and infidelity, solitude and community. They reimagine their bodies and their sexuality, revealing the many faces of love and violence. Above all, they pursue their dreams, inviting the audience on an experiential journey of emancipation; a dive into the fascinating topography of womanhood.
