Project Description
On the night of Friday, November 13, 2015, Paris was rocked by the deadliest terrorist attack in French history, leaving 130 people dead and hundreds injured. Among the targets of the simultaneous attacks was La Belle Équipe, a popular cafe in the 11th arrondissement. Its owner, Grégory Reibenberg, survived the mass shooting. His close friends and his wife, his “beautiful team” (belle équipe), did not.
After the attacks, Grégory wrote an autobiographical book in which he dissects the tragic events and himself. His memoir is a gesture of survival and a political manifesto of humanity, stripped of any embellishment or melodrama. It is a raw and honest work, infused with equal doses of black humor and disarming tenderness.
Over the course of 200 pages, Grégory shares his despair, his anger, his guilt, his existential chaos, and his views on blind hatred and violence, revealing a man searching for his place between the memories of his dead and the new memories he is trying to create.
Based on his memoirs and original conversations between him and Martha Bouziouri during the project’s development in Paris, ‘Belle Équipe’ documentary theatre project negotiates the painful mechanisms of rebirth after disaster, intersecting a personal tragedy with the collective reality of rising terrorism.
